Chronicles 7: on-duty deaths

Reporting violence against security professionals that might have been prevented by training and tools.

In February 2022, Harmandeep Kaur was on duty at UBC Okanagan. Dante OGNIBENE-HEBBOURN was working as a custodian in the same area, and the were acquainted with each other. OGNIBENE-HEBBOURN had mental health issues, and his family had concerns about OGNIBENE-HEBBOURN harming himself. He didn’t. He brutally attacked Kaur. Kaur died in hospital the next day. OGNIBENE-HEBBOURN pled guilty to manslaughter.

Security professionals are expected to engage in challenging, dangerous, and litigious situations. They are unprepared in terms of their training, and in the tools they carry. Training might have helped deflect the attack.
