The Northwest Territories does not license or require training of security guards. The government trusts security employers to appropriately hire and train their security staff. This has failed twice in the past three months.
In January 2026, two security guards assaulted a man as he was cooperative and leaving the establishment. The guards have been arrested and charged with assault causing bodily harm. Training would have taught the guard their lawful rights and responsibilities, and how to stay in emotional control.
